The gearbox is an essential component of your vehicle which allows you to select the appropriate gearing for the low and high speeds you are travelling. It is common for gearbox parts to naturally wear down due to the amount of friction caused between parts when a vehicle is driven, such as the linkages and synchromesh.

Here are a few signs to look out for to determine if you need your gearbox checked:

Unusual noises
If you're hearing more noise than usual from your vehicle while it’s in neutral then it's likely cause will be worn down gearbox parts. One of the biggest indicators that your gearbox has an issue will be if you hear a clunking, humming or whining noise when you shift gears which sound mechanical, abrupt and loud.

Won’t go into gear
If your vehicle simply refuses to go into a specific gear it is worth checking the level of transmission fluid as this is a common issue which could be resolved by topping up the fluid. There are other potential issues that would prevent you being able to go into a specific gear.

Burning smell
If you come across a burning smell, this could be a sign the transmission fluid is overheating. If ignored the entire transmission may need replacing.

A leak or low transmission fluid
The transmission system can only operate while automatic transmission fluid lubricates, cleans and conditions the seals while acting as hydraulic fluid. Even if the transmission fluid is below normal levels, your vehicle will suffer if it all leaks and could face severe problems.

Dragging or slipping clutch
If your clutch is dragging, this can be triggered when the flywheel and clutch fail to disengage, which makes changing gears almost impossible. This gearbox problem will likely be accompanied by a grinding noise every time you try to change gears. If you are putting your vehicle into a gear and it slips out, this is likely to be caused by the gears themselves as they have worn down.

No response from gearbox
If you feel resistance when changing gear or the gearstick keeps popping out then an issue is imminent. Normally there should no resistance when you go into gear, therefore even with the slightest change you should contact us as soon as possible for a check.
